Terms of use

Working on your own bike is your choice and your responsibility. Here is what that means for these guides.

You do the work at your own risk

The guides describe how to adjust, service and replace bicycle components. A brake, derailleur or crank that is installed or adjusted incorrectly can fail and cause a crash. By using a guide you accept that you are responsible for the work you do and for checking that the bike is safe before you ride it. If you are not confident about a step, have a qualified bicycle mechanic do it.

Check the figures against the source

Torque values, part numbers and compatibility notes are taken from manufacturers' documents, which are linked on each page. Manufacturers revise their documents and sometimes change parts within a model family. Before you rely on a figure, confirm it in the current document for the exact model number printed on your part. Where a guide and the manufacturer's document disagree, follow the manufacturer.

Brakes

After any brake work, test the brakes at walking pace on flat ground before riding, and bed in new pads as the manufacturer describes. Never ride a bike whose brake lever reaches the handlebar or whose pads or rotor have come into contact with oil or other fluid. Use only the brake fluid the manufacturer specifies for your brake.

What the site does not cover

We do not provide guidance on e-bike batteries or motors, suspension internals, carbon repair, wheel building, or deciding whether a damaged frame or component is safe. Nothing on the site is a safety inspection or a substitute for one.

No warranty

The guides are provided as they are, without warranty of any kind. To the extent the law allows, Bicycle Manual is not liable for injury, loss or damage arising from the use of the site. Working on a component yourself may affect its manufacturer's warranty; check its terms first.

Trademarks

Shimano, SRAM and other names are trademarks of their owners and are used only to identify the parts a guide applies to. Bicycle Manual is not affiliated with any manufacturer.
